Hiring Taxis are really very very expensive,
Undoubtedly going via train would be comparatively cheaper. Go for One Day Travel Pass and you will be able to utilize it further as well.

You’ll fly into Bern, like really fly? Well, if so… I guess you’ll fly to Zurich. From there it’s only about a three hour trip by train to zermatt. From Bern to Zermatt it only takes about two hours.
Taxis are expensive here. A distance of 130km. That would cost easily 200 to 250 swiss francs.
I really recommend you taking the train. btw I’m Swiss…

No, Switzerland is incredibly expensive for taxi rides, don’t even consider them for this journey! I also strongly doubt if a taxi is quicker than public transport. I live in Basel and ski Zermatt several times a year, and it is as quick by public transport as in my car, perhaps quicker and certainly less hassle. What is more ZERMATT IS A CAR-FREE VILLAGE – even taxis are not allowed to drive there, except the local electric ones that only operate in the village, so a taxi would have to drop you in a nearby village anyway and you would get on a train. The ONLY way into Zermatt is by train. Once you arrive at Zermatt station you can take an electric taxi from the station to your hotel for about SFr10-20 if it isn’t walking distance away.
I doubt if Berne is the best airport to arrive in. Sion also has an airport with some international flights, and is closer to Zermatt. However most international flights fly into Basel, Zurich or Geneva. From Zurich Airport direct to the centre of Zermatt is as little as three and a half hours, with a single change at Visp. Basel and Geneva airport transfer times are around four hours, with Geneva Airport providing frequent serrvices that only require one change for Zermatt.
Swiss public transport is convenient, efficient, reliable, cost-effective and frequent. The Swiss Transfer ticket at SFr 127 will get you to and from the Airport and Zermatt most cost-effectively, but there are other options if you want to travel more widely. Incidentally Zermatt is in a totally stunning setting and is a really lovely village with a host of things to do. Enjoy!

What makes you think you’ll fly into Bern? Very few commercial flights go to Bern and they tend to be not much cheaper than taking a taxi. I’m also rather confused about the 8 hour train ride, that would be quite the indirect route (the very slow and considerably longer Glacier Express from St. Moritz is a bit less than 8 hours—it’s not a real “express” train). You could get from Bern station to Zermatt in about 2 1/2 hours.
I’d guess 800 francs for the taxi–they normally charge for the return trip if they’re going out of their range. Plus 20 or so for the bit of the route that you have to take a train for anyway, since there are no cars in Zermatt.
