I think shaking hands may be too much as it could be awkward trying to reach back to the back seat or something.

Just a simple “Good afternoon, Sir, where are you off to today?” Is just fine.

A simple “good morning/afternoon/evening, how are you” is fine. Shaking their hand is not necessary at all, and in fact, would be rather awkward. Here are a few more additional items I learned when I drove a cab.

Help them with any bags or packages. Get out and put them in the trunk if you have to.

Many passengers like to start conversations. And when they do, by all means join in and keep it going. Act genuinely interested in the subject even if you’re totally bored with it.

If the passenger has a small child, make a comment or two as to how cute the kid is. Parents go for that in a big way. Don’t complain if the kid starts kicking the back of your seat.

At their destination, ask precisely where they would like to be let out, and make every effort to accommodate them. Whatever you do, don’t forget any items in the trunk.

The friendlier and more helpful you are, your chances of a bigger tip increase dramatically.
