There is an Avis counter as you exit just besides the pre-paid counter. They charge INR500/- but it is much safer than the yellow ones.

I think, if you can bargain, Rs. 300 is OK (not only considering the diesel cost and fare but also the odd hour factor).

For your safety you may note down a few numbers of Kolkata Police.

Local Police Station of Dum Dum: Cossipore
    Ph: (91-33) 2556-6434 / 2543-2100 / 2532-9149
    Email: cossipore@kolkatapolice.org

Head quarter of Kolkata Police: Lalbazar Control Room
    Ph: (91-33) 2214-3024 / 2214-3230 / 2214-1310
    (91-33) 2214-5512 [Fax]

Traffic Control Room: (To be contacted in case of any road incidents / accidents)
    Ph: (91-33) 2214-3644 / 2242-7248

Kolkata is very safe; no need to worry. But you must have these numbers saved in your cell phone for emergency. Kolkata Police is always there to help you – feel free to contact them.
