That was brilliant!! I was 14 when this was filmed, and remember watching them pass at Red Rock (Bishopsteignton). Great, yet sad to see how Newton has changed. If only it was still like this now…

    Thanbks for posting

Both mechanical signal boxes were decomissioned in March 1987. Between them, they boasted 359 mechanical levers, East Box being the largest operatinal in the UK for some time.

Newton Abbot was almost like a GWR signalling museum back then! What a shame the joint railway compainies never got to keep boththeir routes through devon, I’ve a feeling Newton Abbot would be far more busy and imprtant than it is today…just another green panel in a PSB…

it could be said that the devon banks and coast are never the same without the cl 52 westerns for diesel fans, much the same
without the manor class steam loco,s
for steam fans….! such a beautiful meandering strech of railway!

    mischief670-
such a high quality video!,i love the cl50s
we built em up here in the n/west at the
vulcan foundry and leased em to british rail., the western region inherited them as we got the al7s in the mid 70s for the eletric scots….! both the loco and the scenery do justice to each other!

Yeah thats true, but the platform face is still largely intact, however the track bed is now a Car Park. The array of semaphores amazed me, and the savage track rationalization! That loco stabling road in the middle of the up and down main! Quality.

    Benn1988 on me mates account…
